Week 3

English

Bumble and Wise Old Owl would like you to have a go at identifying the rhyming pairs from the Gruffalo. Can you spot all the rhyming words in the story? Can you think of your own rhyming pairs?

Why don’t you create your own pairs game? Cut a piece of paper into an even number. Write your rhyming pairs onto the pieces and them turn them over. Take it in turns to find the words that match.

Here are a couple of games you might want to try:

Maths

On the blog, Mrs Gillison has posted a video to remind you how to subtract using a number line. Your challenge today is to create some of your own subtraction sentences and use your number line to calculate them. For example.

9-4=

Ben has 6 sweets and Megan ate 3 of them. How many does Ben have left?

17-9=

Don’t forget to explain how you have calculated your answer to a grown up!

As a challenge, your grown up could complete an addition on a number line with a mistake in it and you need to find the mistake and explain what went wrong.

Bumble and Wise Old Owl heard that a few of you have been enjoying playing shops or setting up cafe role play. You could use this method to make sure you are giving your customers the correct amount of change!

Science Task

Your task is to take a Science Selfie: a photo showing you taking part in some aspect of science. Share your selfie to the Padlet and comment explaining what element of science you are doing.

You can choose any aspect of science that interests you. If you need some inspiration there are some great ideas on this website: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html and there are a few attachments here that may be of use.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Gruffalo food menu.

Thinking back to the Guffalo story from Monday, we would like you to think about what you would do if you met the Gruffalo in real life. What would you say? Would you trick the Gruffalo like the mouse did? Would you pretend to be some one else? Where would you hide?

Have a go at writing at writing in your morning book using the title “If I met the Gruffalo…”

Maths

On the blog, Mrs Gillison has posted a video to remind you how to add using a number line. Your challenge today is to create some of your own addition sentences and use your number line to calculate them. For example.

4+7=

Ben has 6 sweets and Megan has 9. How many do they have altogether?

11+5=

Don’t forget to explain how you have calculated your answer to a grown up!

As a challenge, your grown up could complete an addition on a number line with a mistake in it and you need to find the mistake and explain what went wrong.

This week we are going to focus on The Guffalo by Julia Donaldson. Now don’t worry if you don’t have the book at home, BBC iPlayer have provided all of Julia Donaldson’s books for you to watch (https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00pk64x/the-gruffalo) For today’s writing task, Wise Old Owl and Bumble would like you to write a character profile of the Gruffalo, What words are used to describe him? What does he look like? What is his personality? This can be done as a piece of writing or as a thought shower/ mind map around your own drawing of The Gruffalo.

Maths Finding totals using a number line.

We have previously spent some time looking at finding totals using a numberline and we’d like you to have a go at consolidating your knowledge. For today we would like you to create your own number line to 30.   Here is an example:

This number line could be drawn in your morning book, on a plain piece of paper or outside with some chalk. It is up to you! But, you will need to make sure you draw it carefully, and that each number has a small line either above or below it, just like the example. When we did this is school, we found it a lot easier to spread our numbers out and to use the whole piece of paper. You will need a number line for the activities on Wednesday and Friday. Have fun
