Monday
In Maths this week we are going to be looking at counting in 2s.
Using post it notes or pieces of paper, make yourself some number cards. Write on them 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 & 20. I will put a few ideas now with what I would like you to do with them.
- Mix them all up and ask your child to arrange them in order, starting with 0.
- Repeat the same activity, but this time start with 20 and put them in order from biggest to smallest.
- Now put them in order again and ask your child to close their eyes, remove or turnover a number and ask them which number is missing. Rpt again several times with different numbers.
- Take it in turns to chant counting in 2s – so if I begin with 2, child say 4, you say 6 etc up to 20 and then back again. Counting backwards is usually quite difficult to begin with, keep practising though and they’ll get better.
- Ask your child “What do you notice about these numbers?” They might begin to notice that they all end in a 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. Are these numbers odd or even? (even). Can they name any other even numbers? E.g. 22 (encourage your child to say “22 is an even number. I know this because it ends in a 2 and all numbers that end in 2 are even.” Repeat this with other numbers.
- Using building bricks, objects around the house, pasta, clothes pegs etc, can they make the different numbers. E.g. 2 (2 racing cars), 4 socks, 6 pieces of pasta etc. Ask them, “What do you notice about 2 and 4 or 4 and 8?” Can they begin to spot that there is double the amount. E.g. If I had two lots of 2 racing cars then I would have 4.
Using this website: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares ask your child to paint all the squares of the numbers that we looked at before (0-20). Can we continue the pattern to 30? 50? or maybe even 100? All of these numbers are even.

Below are a list of websites that will help to consolidate counting in 2s:
Now have a go at counting these and recording them or saying them aloud if you don’t have access to a printer.
