HL 4

Number Monday- Partitioning

We would like you to have a go at using objects from around the house to show the place value (tens and ones) of a number. Mrs Gillison has posted a ‘How to’ guide on the blog to help 😊

One of the common misconceptions when partitioning is that we say 49 is made up of 4 and 9, it isn’t. 49 is made up of 40 (4 tens) and 9 (9 ones).

Have a go at partitioning the numbers below. You can use objects from around your house to help you for example, chips and peas, pasta and rice, cars, Lego, pencils, straws, clothes pegs, playdough etc.

In school we normally use diennes, which we also call chips and peas!

Make sure you write the partitioning sentence underneath (40+9= 49) :

39                                       60                                   27                                     58                               82

Now ask your grown up to give you 5 more.

Challenge-

Once you have mastered partitioning into tens and ones, have a go at partitioning into hundreds, tens and ones. Don’t forget to write the number sentence as well!
